Emotional & Social Self
The Emotional & Social Self competency encompasses students' capacities to notice, name, and regulate their own emotions; read and respond to others' emotional states with empathy and perspective; and develop a stable, culturally-situated sense of personal identity. It is the affective and relational foundation for all learning and wellbeing in the REAL framework, sequenced from naming feelings and using calming strategies at Band A through to articulating a personal regulation system and navigating identity across cultural contexts at Band F.

Where the evidence stands
Moderate evidenceThe evidence for this competency is genuinely mixed — strong foundations in some areas, real qualifications in others.
Research on how people regulate difficult emotions has produced some of the most replicated findings in psychology, alongside some important deflations. Walter Mischel's work on cognitive regulation strategies — reframing, redirecting attention, mentally distancing — is well replicated and grounds C1's strategy content at lower bands. His marshmallow studies suggested that early self-control predicts adult outcomes, but those predictions have since been revised: once family socioeconomic background is accounted for, much of the signal disappears. A related mechanism, affect labelling — naming the emotion you are feeling — has strong evidence in adults but thinner direct replication with children.
The clearest evidence for this competency comes from research on teacher–student relationships. Roorda and colleagues' meta-analyses, synthesising nearly 300 studies, find that warm relationships consistently predict student engagement and, to a lesser extent, achievement. This is correlational evidence, not experimental: it shows a strong association, not a controlled effect. That distinction matters. What it does justify is treating relational quality as a real developmental lever, not just a background condition.
Universal SEL programmes targeting the same content area return small but real post-intervention effects in the most rigorous current synthesis (Cipriano et al., 2023: g ≈ 0.22 for social-emotional skills). REAL School's design sequences the learning, keeps practice active, and treats adult modelling of regulation as non-negotiable — the conditions the evidence most consistently supports.
What the evidence supports
Name the emotion with students, but always pair naming with a strategy — recognition alone is insufficient and can misfire. Teach specific regulation moves: redirecting attention, reframing the situation, stepping back mentally from what is distressing. Build these through repeated practice in real situations, not just discussion. Model your own regulation in the classroom — students learn as much from watching adults manage difficulty as from direct instruction. Build warm, consistent relationships; co-regulation precedes self-regulation.
Caveats
Naming an emotion doesn't always reduce its intensity — under some conditions it can amplify it. The research on affect labelling is robust in adults, but classroom replication in children is limited and the mechanism is not well understood in younger age groups. Pair naming with a strategy; don't treat recognition alone as sufficient.
