Learning target 4.4

Emotional Development & Relationships

Use knowledge of emotional and relational development to identify, explain, and analyse patterns in emotional experiences and relationships.

T2Horizontal understanding
Conceptual understanding that integrates across contexts — how students reason and apply ideas. Assessed by the quality of the reasoning, not just recall.

How this learning target compares

REAL leads with practised disposition. Three comparable frameworks lead with different things. For this learning target, here is how each one approaches the same ground — and where the divergences are.

RSHE

leads with knowledge

Pupils studying secondary RSHE learn to talk about emotions accurately, recognise that worrying and feeling down are normal, and understand common types of mental ill health. [rshe-pilot-extracts §11, §12, §13] REAL covers adjacent territory but adds the science: students at Bands D and above learn dual-process accounts of emotion, the stress-response window, habit formation, and the neurobiology of attraction, rejection and loss, and use those frameworks to analyse patterns in described relationships. [real-framework-overview §14, §15] RSHE doesn't reach that explanatory framing.

Welsh CfW

leads with understanding

At Progression Step 5, CfW asks learners to "show an understanding of the complex nature of relationships in a range of contexts", [cfw-pilot-extracts §16] and at earlier steps to develop empathy and regulate emotions. [cfw-what-matters §8] What CfW does not include is the biological and psychological material REAL builds in at Bands D–F: dual-process accounts of emotion, attachment theory, the neuroscience of attraction and loss. [real-framework-overview §14, §15, §16] CfW treats relationships as something to learn through; REAL also treats them as something to study.

CASEL

leads with skill

CASEL's five competencies cover the practice of relationships, self-management of emotions, and decision-making. [casel-framework-definition §1, §3] The biology and psychology of emotional development sit outside the framework — CASEL doesn't specify mechanism-level content. REAL's LT 4.4 adds that explanatory layer at Bands D–F: dual-process accounts of emotion, attachment theory, and the neuroscience of attraction, rejection and loss, applied to real or described relationships. [real-framework-overview §14, §15, §16] A CASEL-based programme covers the relational practice but not the underlying science.

This per-LT view is one of three lenses. The whole-framework essay sets each framework's centre of gravity; the by-theme view shows where overlaps and gaps cut across LTs.
