Learning target 7.1

Knowing How I Learn

I can describe how I learn — what helps me, what gets in my way, and which strategies suit which kinds of tasks.

T2Horizontal understanding
Conceptual understanding that integrates across contexts — how students reason and apply ideas. Assessed by the quality of the reasoning, not just recall.

Six developmental bands

Each band shows what students Know, Understand, and Do at this learning target — from the youngest dragons through Grade 12. Headlines first; expand any band for the full content.

Band A
Water + Air Dragons
K–2ages 5–7
Know

easy/tricky/stuck vocabulary+1 more

Understand

Some tasks feel easy and some feel tricky, and what makes a task tricky is usually something I can name.

Do

I can complete a rubric-assessed conversation in which I name a recent piece of work as easy, tricky, or stuck, and one thing that helped me.

Band B
Earth Dragons
G3–4ages 8–10
Know

common learning strategies+1 more

Understand

A strategy is a deliberate way of doing a task that I can choose on purpose and remember to use again.

Do

I can complete a rubric-assessed reflection in which I name two strategies I have used recently and explain when each one helped me.

Band C
Fire Dragons
G5–6ages 10–12
Know

evidence-based study strategies (retrieval practice; spaced practice; self-explanation)+1 more

Understand

The same task can be done well in more than one way, and I can tell which way worked better for me by comparing them.

Do

I can complete a rubric-assessed analysis in which I compare two strategies I used for the same task and explain which worked better and why.

Band D
Metal + Light Dragons
G7–8ages 12–13
Know

task types (memorising; practising procedures; novel problem-solving; collaborative work)+1 more

Understand

Different kinds of tasks need different strategies, and matching the right strategy to the task is part of the work itself.

Do

I can complete a rubric-assessed task in which I identify the type of task in front of me, choose a strategy that fits, and justify the match.

Band E
Stone Dragons
G9–10ages 14–16
Know

personal learning patterns+2 more

Understand

My learning patterns are partly stable and partly shaped by context, and honest self-knowledge means noticing the gap between what I say and what I do.

Do

I can complete a rubric-assessed reflection in which I describe my learning patterns with examples from across more than one subject, and name a condition that reliably helps me and one that hinders me.

Band F
Sky Dragons
G11–12ages 16–18
Know

Flavell's three types of metacognitive knowledge (cognition, strategy, self)+1 more

Understand

A coherent account of how I learn integrates cognition, strategy, and self, and is always provisional and revisable.

Do

I can produce a rubric-assessed account of how I learn that integrates cognition, strategy, and self, and names where the account is uncertain or where outside feedback might catch a blind spot.
