Critical Digital Literacy
Critical Digital Literacy equips students to evaluate claims and information in digital environments, analyse how digital products are designed to shape attention and behaviour through persuasive design, and maintain healthy boundaries and wellbeing-supporting practices in their digital lives. It is REAL's most systematic SEL-adjacent treatment of digital wellbeing, covering epistemic (LT 8.1), psychological (LT 8.2), and practical-dispositional (LT 8.3) dimensions from Band A through Band F.

Evidence base
Where the evidence stands
ContestedUnderstanding how media works, how information spreads, and how digital environments are designed to capture attention is academic content with a legitimate place in any curriculum — not an add-on justified solely by wellbeing outcomes. The English RSHE framework, which REAL School's crosswalk confirms alignment with, explicitly requires teaching about online safety, media literacy, and the reliability of information. This competency sits alongside English, citizenship, and critical thinking as part of a broad information-literacy tradition. The evidence for specific techniques is solid; the claim that digital literacy curricula directly improve adolescent mental health is a separate and more contested question.
Two teaching techniques have credible empirical support. Lateral reading — leaving a source to open new tabs and search what others say about it before reading it in depth — was developed by Wineburg and colleagues at Stanford. It differs from the familiar skill of corroboration: lateral reading happens before you read, not after. A district-wide study (Wineburg et al., 2022) found significant gains on judging whether a source is credible after just six lessons. Inoculation, sometimes called prebunking, builds resistance by exposing students to weakened forms of manipulation before they encounter them in the wild. An example: before students see real climate misinformation, show them a fabricated 'fake expert' claim — name the technique, explain how it works, then have them spot it elsewhere. Studies show consistent effects across cultures (Roozenbeek & van der Linden, 2019; Basol et al., 2020). Jeong, Cho and Hwang's (2012) meta-analysis of 51 media literacy interventions found d = 0.37.
The question of whether social media damages adolescent mental health is genuinely unresolved — and teaching students to navigate that unresolved debate is itself a curriculum goal. Haidt argues smartphones are a major cause of post-2010 mental health declines, especially for girls. Orben and Przybylski (2019) argue that when the same data is analysed across every reasonable statistical approach, effects are tiny — their critique is that selective analysis choices in other studies inflate apparent harm. Odgers and Jensen (2020) find small associations unable to distinguish cause from effect. The honest framing: an association exists, it is small at population level, it may be larger for some groups, and causal evidence is weak. Teach the debate rather than settling it — this is one of the clearest available examples of how contested science works in practice.
What the evidence supports
Teach lateral reading as a concrete skill — when evaluating an unfamiliar source, open new tabs and search what others say about it before reading it deeply. Use inoculation games: Bad News and Cranky Uncle are free and classroom-ready. Teach the Haidt-Orben/Przybylski debate explicitly — have students read both sides as an exercise in evaluating contested evidence. Distinguish three types of digital harm, each with different responses: content harms (misinformation, body image), design harms (algorithmic amplification, variable reward), and displacement harms (sleep, in-person contact).
Caveats
Do not present the social media harm question as settled in either direction — the scientific debate is live and REAL School's curriculum should say so. 'Screen time' is not a single exposure; what matters is type, platform, context, and the individual. Inoculation addresses misinformation resistance; it does not address platform design harms — these are different problems requiring different responses.
