Learning target 4.3

Active Bystander & Anti-Discrimination

Identify discrimination and targeted harm, assess safe bystander responses, and justify reasoning about when and how to act or seek help.

T2Horizontal understanding
Conceptual understanding that integrates across contexts — how students reason and apply ideas. Assessed by the quality of the reasoning, not just recall.

Criteria — what growth looks like

Every learning target has a set of criteria specifying what growth looks like at each band. Each criterion expands to five competency-level descriptors — from no evidence through to extending.

17 criteria across 6 bands.

    4. Competent

I can describe a situation where someone was left out or treated unkindly and name what I saw.

    5. Extending

    2. Emerging

I say 'an adult' in general but I cannot name a specific person.

    4. Competent

I can identify a specific trusted adult I could tell about an exclusion or unkindness I witnessed.

    5. Extending

I identify a primary trusted adult and a backup adult, and I can say a short reason why each is a good person to tell.

    4. Competent

I can describe what happened when someone was excluded or treated unfairly.

    5. Extending

I describe the scenario with enough specificity (who, what, where) that another reader could picture it, and I distinguish what I saw from what I am inferring.

  • B.2I can suggest how the excluded or unfairly-treated person might have felt.

    Competency-level descriptors

    1. No evidence

The student has not produced work that demonstrates any aspect of this learning target at Band B.

    2. Emerging

I say the person felt 'bad' or 'sad' without considering a plausible range of feelings.

    3. Developing

    4. Competent

I can suggest how the excluded or unfairly-treated person might have felt.

    5. Extending

I suggest more than one plausible feeling and point to cues in the scenario (the words, the setting, the actions) that support each guess.

    2. Emerging

I pick an option without giving a reason, or my reason is simply 'it is the best one'.

    4. Competent

I can select one helpful action from a short list of options with one-sentence reasoning for my choice.

    5. Extending

I pick an option with a reason that connects the action to who was hurt, what was happening, and why this action fits rather than another.

    5. Extending

I assess safety by weighing who is present, the kind of harm, whether I could exit, and whether the targeted person would want direct intervention or something else.

I can identify my own likely default response to a discrimination scenario and its probable sources.

    5. Extending

    5. Extending
